The illusion of productivity

More Speed. More apps. More hacks. More surrender of our privacy – our “humanness”
More PRODUCTIVITY.

Us sensitive people can see through the words.
We can feel the inner unrest, the anxiety of attempting to keep up to this new “smart world”.

The smart world requires more of us, with the promise of making life “easier”.
But whats the return on investment?

Busy.
Thats what I hear when I ask people “How are you doing?”.
Sometimes even crazy busy”!

We are told that” busyness” is productive.
I argue that its reactive.

The digital elephant in the room
(in the hand)

I broke up with my smart phone in 2012.
I found that I was more reactive than productive in relationship with its constant pull for my attention.
I was reacting to other peoples requests. Someone else’s nervous whims!
Email, test, IM, Phone calls, voice mails, group messaging ….all of which I would (according to the sender)
be best servered to react to  NOW. The IS a pressure to respond. quickly.
Within minutes.
No one really demands instant, its simply expected.  Its par for the course.
My smartphone relationship was based on a lie.
It promismed me productivity.
But it failed to deliver in any meaningful, measureable way!

Reactive.

With the “smart” phone  I was simply.…reactive.  And sadly….Damn good at it!
Id read and respond to the message instantly.
Where was I when I did so?
On the toilet. (LOL but you know TRUE)
Driving. (cummon now!)
In a meeting.
Walking.
Talking to someone (face to face – RUDE!)
Eating a meal.

REACTIVE.

“Busy” –  in th form of reacting does not equal productivity.

Our two most valuable assets are our time and attention.
It just so happens that thats exactly all the smart world desires from us.
After we surrender our time and attention, how can we create?
How can we do almost anything ………but react?

Advise on authentic productivity.
(You’ll really stand out).

Cal Newport, in his great read “Slow productivity”  ofers this simple yet wise guidance to counter the fast paced “reactive”
world that sells us GMO productivity billed as authentic…..

1 -Do Fewer Things.
2-Work at a Natural Pace.
3-Obsess over Quality
.

I agree.
